Caldeira (Mario Canonge Trio, 2026)

Mario Canonge, the legendary pianist from Martinique, seems to have found his spiritual and artistic essence with this magical trio imbued with earthy tones. Like three ‘Ayurvedic’ elements, Mario Canonge, Michel Alibo and Arnaud Dolmen reveal themselves poetically as: fire, earth and air… In pursuit of an imaginary absolute, these three shamans come together to celebrate the very essence of the Earth, within its bosom with its primordial magma, like burning blood that gives life. This album, titled Caldeira—representing the circular depression at the heart of a volcanic edifice—evokes the trio’s sophisticated music, born of an eruption of ideas as creative as they are innovative. To the brilliant notes of this quasi-mystical triptych are added those of the virtuoso saxophonist Godwin Louis, an American jazz musician of Haitian origin. Aside from being a supreme delight for the ears, this album is also a vivid invitation to an extraordinary emotional journey, centred on the peoples living at the foot of volcanoes, who are often, by nature, sun-loving peoples… The music of master composer Mario Canonge, subtle and utterly refined, is to be savoured with a rare delicacy, much like the haute cuisine of a Michelin-starred chef.
