Welcome to Mario Canonge‘s website. On the music scene for several decades, this remarkable jazzman has become a key figure in the realm of jazz. Not only recognized for his talent, but for his compositions as well. As a leader, he has written some of the most beautiful pieces of Caribbean music of the last decades before deciding to follow a more “Jazzistic” path with Rhizome. This orientation was confirmed first with Mitan, released in 2011, then with a particularly rich year 2018. At the beginning of the year, Quint’up, co-lead with his long-time accomplice Michel Zenino, agreed with all the critics. And in November, Mario presented Zouk Out, his jazz review of the contribution of zouk to the Caribbean musical culture. After Kapital in 2020, in a duet with Erik Pédurand, the year 2023 opened with a return to the quintet, with the second volume Quint’Up II of the successful formation created with Michel Zenino. The album is closely followed by a live recording of Mario’s trio at Le Comptoir in Fontenay sous Bois, accompanied by Michel Alibo and Arnaud Dolmen. In 2024, recordings from a concert with Thierry Lange-Berteaux provided the material for the album Search for Peace, and at the end of the year, in a duo with Michel Zenino, Mario released Paraphrases. While sorting through old boxes, Mario rediscovered the recordings from a duo concert at the Olympia with Alain Jean-Marie; this became the album Con Alma, released in 2025, before Mario worked on the second installment of his trio with Michel Alibo and Arnaud Dolmen to release Caldeira in April 2026.
